How to Elope in the UK (and beyond)

January 27, 2022

All about Elopements.

When I tell people I’m a UK elopement photographer I often hear ‘oh is this when couples runaway in secret so no one knows.’ and I’m always like sort of, kind of but no not really (now I can just send them to this blog post.)

So what is an Elopement these days?

Everyone has their own definition of this but mine is ‘doing whatever you want, whenever you want with whoever you want to celebrate your love’ I mean there are legal confinements to that but I think it does the trick. Elopements no longer just have to involve the two of you but still remain pretty small in terms of guests. Bring your family, bring your best friends, bring your dog, definitely bring me and that’s pretty much your guest list. The smaller aspect of this gives you a super personal and intimate day with your favourites and maybe even treating them to special activities/experiences you might not have considered with a bigger guest list. The elopements I tend to do are often in nature and things like weather, lighting, outfit options definitely offer an exciting challenge. This is why planning is super important during your elopement (we can go through this together.)

How do I elope in the UK?

Eloping in the UK is pretty easy although it depends on where you decide to go. So Scotland is one of the most popular places to elope due to the legal factors. You can literally get married anywhere in Scotland as long as you have your witnesses and a celebrant and have registered to marry! This makes it a cracking choice. Not only this but Scotland has alllll the scenes you can want. From the valleys of Glencoe to the beauties of the Isle of Skye and the incredible lochs and woodlands. You are spoilt for choice, Scotland truly is a magical place.

The rest of the UK is still catching up but it basically means you can pop to the registry office/an epic venue for the legal bit on the day or just before then have your ceremony and the rest of your day where you like with a humanist/celebrant.

An important part of eloping is giving notice to marry. You must do this at your local registry office at least 29 days before the ceremony.

If you are not a citizen of the U.K you can get a visa to marry over here too!

Fun things to do during your elopement!

Boat ride: This is such an adorable thing to do as a way to see some sights and enjoy eachothers company.

Check out:

Kayak, canoe, paddleboarding: For the water lovers. Maybe even get a just married wetsuit!?

Get a personal chef into your airbnb/wherever you’re staying and have the most lux meal of your life.

Hot air balloon/horse ride/helicopter tour.

I cannot stress this enough. Do whatever makes you happy.
